Just when I thought I owned all of Susan Wiggs books I discovered this one What a wonderful read one that I couldn t put down I finished it at 330 am Whether Ms Wiggs is writing a historical a contemporary or something in between it is always magnificent The first time I ever read one of her books I told my husband the difference between hers and other authors books is that hers has substance With as many as I ve read that opinion has not varied It is sort of original This woman smart and with a thirst for invention gets involved in some complot to help Bonaparte This spy Ian saves her from a fire and she does not remember a thing Then he pretends he is her fiance and then the real fiance also gets there and so she s suppossed to find who is lying and who is not Of course Ian is from Scotland and way passionate and roguish and then she falls in love with him He has a past pretty much his whole family was killed by an English man and he has always looked for revenge His mom was raped and his brother and dad died He finally finds the dude the one to blame and fights to death on an air balloon after he mistakingly thought Miranda had chosen her former beau Lucas Then he survives when he realizes revenge was not worth it only Miranda was And then they get married and live happily ever after The heroine of this story was super interesting and the backstory was mysterious and intriguing 3 StarsThis was far from a favorite Susan Wiggs but it wasn t that bad The story was interesting enough about a woman who can t remember who she is and two men who both claim to be her betrothed It was an interesting intrigue story and the ending was very action packedWhat bothered me the most was some of the inconsistency in the book Ian one of the main characters is Scottish and often times he speaks with a Scottish accent using Scottish words or slang Then he won t do it again till a few chapters later Its like the author suddenly remembered and tossed in those words and phrases It was a tad annoying because I found myself stopping wondering what was being said then realizing it All in
All Not A Badnot a bad but she has done much better historical A sweet intriguing story with some good bones and character development that was touching made me smile but overall a little too lascivious for my tastes Content Advisory for those curiousTwo graphic sex scenes I don t know how graphic they got as I skipped them once they started kissing touching groping undressing etc ou get the picture There s plenty of sexual remarks attraction throughout the book Once Ian tells Miranda about a trick he learned in a brothel safe to say I skipped over that part like no way I don t really want to
Know What Sex Trick Youwhat sex trick ou in a brothel buddy That s just not my jam The rape of a secondary character is mentioned a few times There s an attempted rape get s interrupted As far as language is concerned the characters swear a lot offscreen and when they do swear in print which happened uite a bit they took God s name in vain in various forms In terms of numbers I m guessing around 20 30 timesOverall I liked the plot the characters were okay they didn t wow me but I felt for their plight I felt it could ve gone deeper but
alas that is not the point to every book so that s that Everything was too focused on the sexualitythat is not the point to every book so that s that Everything was too focused on the sexuality a relationship for me to really enjoy Miranda to its full potential It felt unbalanced considering how much emphasis was put on the physical side of their relationship though I understand that Ian was doing it to try and get secret s out of Miranda but stillit just didn t ple. characters Miranda author Susan WiggsAse me I did appreciate however the character development took place in both Ian and Miranda They grew as characters and their arc was gradual and satisfying to read They ended off better than they started despite the rather sketchy journey of their
relationship A very different story from Wiggs Miranda loses her memory in a warehouse explosion She isA very different story from Wiggs Miranda loses her memory in a warehouse explosion She is by the Scottish hero Ian MacVane Lots of history of the struggle between England and Scotland And of course the love story Do ou remember when every Regency historical had to have a spy adorable urchins or both Published in 1996 this novel predates the Playhouse years where readers could find a spy skulking in every ballroom and it does avoid many of the clich s in which spy romances of the early 2000s abound I wasn t sure whether to expect a romp or high adventure and as it turns out I got neither There is some adventure to be had in this novel but it s a deeply emotional love story of the sort I lapped up as a high school and college student in the 90sSet during Napoleon s temporary exile to Elba the story opens as Ian MacVane rescues aoung woman from a mysterious warehouse fire The stunned woman remembers nothing about herself or her past and the only clue to her identity is a locket around her neck bearing the name Miranda In the confusion of the fire Miranda falls into the hands of the night watch and since she cannot identify herself she ends up in BedlamIan eventually finds Miranda and is able to get her out of the asylum by proclaiming himself to be her fianc Convinced Miranda is in danger Ian decides to marry her Along the way another man claiming to be Miranda s fianc appears and of course intrigue ensuesThe intrigue in this story definitely captured my attention The spy plot is well constructed and the historical details woven into the story made the plot and the characters motives feel very believable Ian s past has made him something of an outsider and one can easily see why he would have fallen in with the company he has The mystery of Miranda s past and how that fit into the treachery swirling around her kept me hooked as wellThis is a partial review You can find the complete text at All About Romance There was an explosion and Miranda Stonecypher felt herself being thrown She thought she was dead but she somehow survived and was rescued by a Scottsman who she later found out was Ian MacVane She saw him rescue a oung boy also They were separated for a few days because she was found and taken to Bedlam because she had no memory of who she was Ian searched until he found her there and took her away with him He took her with him to Scotland where they were married Ian had convinced Miranda that they were engaged before she lost her memory She was convinced that he was correct and that she was indeed in love with him during the time they spent together They were preparing to spend the night together when another man showed up to interrupt their wedding feast He was Lucas Chesney He told Miranda that he was her fiancee Miranda ended up fleeing Scotland to head back to London to find out the truth about herself Miranda was a scientist who had hidden behind her fathers name to introduce balloon flight and also learned how to direct rockets to hit intended targets She came to remember that her father had been
